ROLL OVER BEETHOVEN - Freo Herald Article

We're super grateful to the Fremantle Herald Official for interviewing us in their latest edition!! This article explains why we're so excited about Symbiosis, and gives a little more context for what audiences can expect to hear on the night

While we perhaps wouldn't have chosen this title, it means a lot to be supported by a major, independent, institution in spreading the word about our mission.

P.S. We don't have an issue with audiences engaging with and enjoying music by iconic composers such as Beethoven, Mozart, etc. Amazing music deserves to be heard! The thing is, people from more marginalised backgrounds have also been writing amazing music throughout history, and we would like to hear their music too!

Here's the full quote that we provided to the journalist on this topic, and why Tenth Muse exists.

Q: Is the main gist of the organisation to bring classical music to the masses in a more exciting and accessible format, playing music not by “dead white men”?

A: Our aim is to make art music more accessible, by presenting concerts in interesting and welcoming ways. We also only programme music by diverse and underrepresented composers, as the majority of classical music events perform the same small pool of composers over and over.

Women, non binary, and other marginalised people have been traditionally excluded from writing classical music, but throughout history disempowered people have been expressing themselves through music (like every artform of course!!) However, these people have often been forgotten or deliberately erased from history. There is a broad international awakening where scholars, musicians, and audiences alike are rediscovering a rich history of high quality music by a much more diverse range of voices than what has previously been known. We want to be part of increasing the diversity in the classical scene locally. (So essentially, we don't want to play more music by "dead white men" because finally it is possible to hear music from the last 400+ years by other people. I hope this context was helpful/ interesting and not wasting your time!!!)
